Malaysian Outstanding Personnel: Tan Sri Hassan Marican

When mention about Hassan Marican, I believe that not all youngsters today know who he is. Plus, with the limitation of information about him in the web, it is extremely difficult to write about him. Nevertheless, I'm trying my best to write a little bit about him. Spoiler alert: He's from my hometown!

Tan Sri Dato Sri Mohd Hassan Marican is the former CEO of Petronas, and have been working with Petronas since 1989 untill 9 February 2010. He was born on 18 Oktober 1952 in Sungai Petani, Kedah, and received his education from SK Ibrahim, SP, and went to Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK)

He was once an audit manager at Touche Ross & Company in London (1972–1980). He was then called to work with Petronas in 1989 as Senior Vice President of Finance, and he became President and Chief Executive Officer in February 1995 up till 2010.

Now, after retiring from Petronas, he was called by the Singapore Government to work as director of companies linked to the government of Singapore, such as SembCorp Industries Ltd, SembCorp Marine Ltd and also Singapore Power.

There goes some stories about my second role model. Started as a young local boy, turns out to be one the most successful person in Malaysian.

Malaysian Outstanding Personnel: Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary

This is one particular person that I'm proud of (although he don't even know me).
He is after all the most successful and well known business person, and you can't simply said that you haven't heard of YAYASAN AL-Bukhary/Al-Bukhary Foundation. Not only rich, Syed Mokhtar is also known to be a philanthropist, where he make good use of his wealth to help people in need (orphanage, giving scholarship etc.)  A little background info about this amazing Bumiputera :

Full name: Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Shah bin Syed Nor Al-Bukhary
Age: 61 (born on 1952)
Place of birth: Alor Star, Kedah
He is the third son from 7 siblings in his family
Education: Sekolah Saint Michael, Alor Setar (SPM)
Ranks: No.526 in Forbes List, No.8 in Malaysian 50 richest person

As I have mention before, he donates a lot of his wealth for charity purposes, both locally and internationally.Among his contributions are:

Al-Bukhary Mosque in Alor Star

  • Al-Bukhary Orpahanage
  • Al-Bukhary Scholarship
  • Al-Bukahry Mosque in Alor Star
  • Involved with the maintenance of Mohiyudheen Mosque, Payyannur, Kerala, India and Al-Rahma Mosque, Azhikode, India
  • Gives charity for Lebanon Humanitarian Fund

Syed Mokhtar being the only Malay figure in the top 10 list
Actually, there are lots more of his contribution, but those are just to state a few of it. Syed Mokhtar did taught me one thing though, that is "everyone can become rich. But what matters is the contribution done towards the society when you're rich". May God bless you~

Malaysian Achievement: The Petronas Twin Towers

Tadaaa~ This is what I'm talking about
So for those of you who are still ignorant about this landmark of Malaysia. It was our ex-PM, Tun Dr. Mahathir's idea to build it, as to promote Malaysia to the top of the world. Honestly, I respect this idea, as some people out there don't even know the existence of Malaysia!

The Petronas Twin tower, consists of 88 levels on both tower, and the sky bridge that connects the 2 towers are located at level 41 & 42. However, visitors are allowed to access the bridge at 41st level because 42nd level is occupied by tenants

The comparison of height~

Here are a few additional fun facts about Petronas Twin Towers:

  1. This is the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 until surpassed by Taipei 101 (however, this is still the tallest twin building in the world!)
  2. It was designed by Argentine architect César Pelli.
  3. The total construction cost of Petronas Twin Towers was $1,600,000,000.
  4. The construction begin on 1 March 1993, and opened publicly on 1 August 1999.
  5. A number of companies have offices in Tower Two, including Huawei Technologies, AVEVA, Al Jazeera English, Carigali Hess, Bloomberg, Boeing, IBM, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, McKinsey & Co, TCS, HCL Technologies, Krawler, Microsoft, The Agency (a modeling company) and Reuters.
There you have it people. I'd say, this is a fine achievement for our country, and I am proud of it(although I haven't visited it much). Oh, and here's a video about this fine achievement.

Malaysian Achievement: The introduction of Proton Automobiles Bhd (PROTON)

As Malaysian, we are proud to state that Proton (Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sendirian Berhad) is our National car. However, how many of us really know whose idea it is to introduce Proton in our nation?

The answer lies with our former PM, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. He is the mastermind in generating idea about Malaysia owning it's own line of automobile, by looking at Japan's achievement in producing their own national car (eg. Mitsubishi, Honda to name a few).

Tun first conceive the idea of producing national car in 1979, and after several years,  on 9 July 1985 the first ever Proton Saga was launched. The design of the first Proton Saga was based on the second generation 1983Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore 4-door, as they had done a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors.

Now, Proton has launched several successful line of cars, such as the Satria Gti, Iswara, Wira, and not to mention those early 2000 models such as Satria Neo, Pesona, Inspira and also Preve.

Proton has been used not only in Malaysia, but it has also build its reputation outside of Malaysia. In addition, Proton has done a lot of collaboration with foreign car manufacturer, for instance Mitsubishi, Lotus, and also Honda.
